Black Temple Guide

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Black Temple is one of the biggest raid checks in TBC. It is a 25-player Tier 6 raid in Shadowmoon Valley with nine bosses, a mostly linear route, heavy trash, Shadow Resistance planning, special tank assignments, and one of the most iconic final bosses in WoW: Illidan Stormrage.

This guide is built as a practical raid-readiness and strategy guide: access, attunement notes, roster setup, consumables, role prep, boss order, boss-by-boss strategies, Shadow Resistance planning, Illidan tank assignments, common wipe causes, and how to use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before zoning in.

Quick Navigation

Important: Black Temple is not one fight. It is a full raid test. You need clean trash movement, Shadow Resistance planning, assigned tanks, reliable interrupts, fast target swapping, and raid members who can handle personal responsibility mechanics.

1. Black Temple Overview

Black Temple is a 25-player Tier 6 raid located in Shadowmoon Valley. It is one of the major endgame raids of TBC and ends with Illidan Stormrage.

Basic raid details:

Boss list:

Why Black Temple matters:

  • It is a major Tier 6 raid.
  • It drops some of the most iconic loot in TBC.
  • It includes Shadow Resistance planning for Mother Shahraz.
  • It includes special tank assignments for Illidan.
  • It tests raid discipline across long trash sections and multiple boss styles.
  • Illidan is one of the biggest execution checks of the expansion.

Black Temple is not difficult because every boss is individually impossible. It is difficult because the raid asks for consistency across a long instance.

2. Access, Location, and Attunement

Black Temple is located in Shadowmoon Valley. The entrance is at the Black Temple itself, on the eastern side of the zone.

Access checklist:

  • Be level 70 and raid-ready.
  • Travel to Black Temple in Shadowmoon Valley.
  • Confirm your raid is set as a 25-player raid.
  • Check your server/phase rules for whether Black Temple attunement is required for entry.
  • Confirm summon team is ready outside the raid.
  • Confirm Shadow Resistance gear is ready before Mother Shahraz progression.

Historical Black Temple attunement:

  • The original Black Temple attunement chain eventually rewards Medallion of Karabor.
  • The chain connects to major Outland progression and involves steps across Shadowmoon Valley, Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, Mount Hyjal, and Black Temple entry events.
  • Many TBC Classic-style rulesets later removed the hard attunement gate, but the chain may still matter for progression, completion, titles, or server-specific rules.

Practical raid-night access check:

  • Confirm nobody is locked out by attunement rules.
  • Confirm players can reach the entrance or be summoned.
  • Confirm Mother Shahraz Shadow Resistance status before raid night, not at her door.
  • Confirm Illidan tanks and Warlock tank assignments before reaching him.

Black Temple has too much raid time involved to discover missing access, missing Shadow Resistance, or missing tank assignments halfway through the night.

3. Shadow Resistance Planning

Mother Shahraz is the main Shadow Resistance checkpoint in Black Temple. Non-tanks generally need high Shadow Resistance to survive raid-wide Shadow damage and Fatal Attraction-style pressure.

Who needs Shadow Resistance?

  • Most non-tank raid members for Mother Shahraz
  • Warlock tank or ranged tank assignment for Illidan Stormrage, depending on your strategy
  • Players who are consistently dying to Shadow damage during progression

Common Shadow Resistance sources:

Practical Shadow Resistance rules:

  • Do not sacrifice all performance blindly if your raid strategy does not require extreme values.
  • Do not ignore Shadow Resistance completely if your raid is dying to Shahraz.
  • Keep meta gem and important set bonuses where possible, but survival comes first during progression.
  • Check raid-wide Shadow Resistance before the night you plan to pull Mother Shahraz.

Mother Shahraz is not where you want to hear “I forgot my Shadow Resistance set.” That is a raid-prep failure, not a fight mechanic problem.

4. Recommended Raid Composition

Black Temple needs a balanced 25-player roster with multiple tanks, strong healing coverage, reliable interrupts, add control, Shadow Resistance readiness, and Illidan-specific assignments.

Safe progression setup:

  • 3-4 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 7-8 healers
  • 13-15 DPS

Farm setup:

  • 2-3 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 6-7 healers
  • 15-17 DPS

Useful raid tools:

  • Warlock tank / ranged tank planning for Illidan demon phase
  • Fire Resistance tanks for Illidan Flame of Azzinoth phase
  • Shadow Resistance gear for Mother Shahraz
  • Interrupts for Reliquary and Council
  • Decurse / dispel coverage
  • AoE control for trash and add phases
  • Hunters for Misdirection
  • Shamans for Bloodlust / Heroism

Assignment-heavy fights:

  • Naj’entus: spine removal and shield break timing
  • Supremus: kite movement and volcano awareness
  • Akama: add control and channeler kill priority
  • Teron: ghost mechanic handling
  • Bloodboil: group rotation and Fel Rage healing
  • Reliquary: interrupt discipline and phase-specific play
  • Mother Shahraz: Shadow Resistance and Fatal Attraction movement
  • Council: multi-boss tanking, interrupts, and target discipline
  • Illidan: multiple tank types, flame control, demon phase, and final burn execution

Black Temple rewards preparation. Most wipes are not “we need more gear.” They are “we did not assign the mechanic properly.”

5. Pre-Raid Checklist

Black Temple is long enough that small prep gaps become expensive. Check the raid before zoning in.

Character readiness:

  • Gear repaired
  • Correct spec for assigned role
  • Correct weapons and trinkets equipped
  • All reasonable gear enchanted
  • All sockets filled
  • Meta gem active if using one
  • Food, flask/elixirs, potions, bandages, reagents, and class items ready
  • Threat tools, interrupts, and defensives keybound
  • Shadow Resistance gear ready if required
  • Fire Resistance gear ready if assigned for Illidan flames

Raid readiness:

  • Naj’entus spine/shield break instructions explained
  • Supremus kite movement explained
  • Teron ghost assignments and practice understood
  • Bloodboil group rotation assigned
  • Reliquary interrupt teams assigned
  • Mother Shahraz Shadow Resistance checked
  • Council tank and interrupt assignments confirmed
  • Illidan main tank, flame tanks, and Warlock/ranged tank assignments confirmed
  • Healer assignments confirmed
  • Loot rules clear before pull

Black Temple has too many moving parts to rely on “we’ll work it out when we get there.”

6. Consumables and Buffs

Black Temple progression can be long, especially while learning Teron, Reliquary, Mother Shahraz, Council, and Illidan. Consumes reduce phase length, healer pressure, and the chance that one mistake becomes a wipe.

Baseline for everyone:

  • Food buff
  • Flask or battle/guardian elixir setup
  • Healing or mana potions as appropriate
  • Class reagents
  • Weapon oil, sharpening stone, or weightstone if relevant
  • Bandages
  • Repair gold

Useful food examples:

Useful potion examples:

Useful flask examples:

Black Temple is a raid where preparation saves time. Wipes are expensive when the instance is long and the later bosses are assignment-heavy.

7. Role-by-Role Prep

Tanks

Tanks should check:

  • Defensive gear ready
  • Threat gear available if survivability is comfortable
  • Mother Shahraz tank positioning understood
  • Illidan main tank assignment understood
  • Illidan Fire Resistance flame tank assignment understood if assigned
  • Illidan Warlock/ranged tank coordination understood if relevant
  • Cooldowns ready for dangerous transitions

Illidan tanking is not a single-tank job. Main tank, flame tanks, and ranged/demon-phase assignments all need to know exactly what they are doing.

Healers

Healers should check:

  • Tank assignments for each boss
  • Naj’entus shield break healing timing
  • Bloodboil Fel Rage target healing
  • Reliquary phase healing restrictions
  • Mother Shahraz raid-wide Shadow damage coverage
  • Council multi-tank healing assignments
  • Illidan main tank, flame tank, and raid healing assignments
  • Mana sustain for long progression pulls

Black Temple healing is not just throughput. It is timing. Naj’entus, Bloodboil, Reliquary, Shahraz, Council, and Illidan all punish late healing swaps.

DPS

DPS should check:

  • Correct kill order for each boss
  • Threat control ready
  • Interrupts and stuns keybound
  • Ability to swap quickly to adds, constructs, spirits, weapons, or priority targets
  • Shadow Resistance set ready if required
  • Consumables ready
  • Gems and enchants finished

Black Temple DPS is not just boss damage. Teron ghosts, Reliquary interrupts, Council target discipline, and Illidan flames/adds all matter more than padding.

8. Recommended Clear Order

Black Temple progression is mostly linear. You clear through the raid toward Illidan.

  1. High Warlord Naj’entus
  2. Supremus
  3. Shade of Akama
  4. Teron Gorefiend
  5. Gurtogg Bloodboil
  6. Reliquary of Souls
  7. Mother Shahraz
  8. The Illidari Council
  9. Illidan Stormrage

The raid gets more assignment-heavy as you go deeper. Do not burn all focus early and then reach Mother Shahraz, Council, or Illidan tired and sloppy.

9. Boss-by-Boss Strategy Guide

Black Temple bosses test different skills: raid healing, movement, add control, personal responsibility, resistance gearing, multi-boss discipline, and long final-boss execution.

High Warlord Naj’entus

Naj’entus is a raid-healing and shield-break timing fight. Players must handle spine mechanics correctly, break his shield at the right time, and recover from heavy raid damage.

What this fight tests: raid healing, spine handling, shield timing, and keeping the raid topped.

Key mechanics:

  • High Warlord Naj'entus
  • Impaling Spine — pins a player and must be removed by another player.
  • Tidal Shield — protects Naj’entus and must be broken using a spine.
  • Shield break raid damage — heavy raid-wide damage when the shield is broken.

Strategy:

  • Tank Naj’entus in the assigned position.
  • Raid spreads enough to reduce unnecessary damage but stays within healing coverage.
  • When a player is hit by Impaling Spine, another player removes it quickly.
  • Keep at least one spine ready for the shield.
  • When Tidal Shield goes up, healers top the raid before the shield is broken.
  • Use the spine to break the shield only after the raid is healthy enough to survive the burst.
  • After the shield breaks, healers recover the raid quickly and the fight continues.

Common mistakes:

  • Spine target left pinned too long
  • Shield broken while raid is low
  • No spine available when shield appears
  • Healers unprepared for shield burst
  • DPS tunnelling instead of helping with spine mechanics

Naj’entus is not hard if the raid is patient. Do not break the shield into a half-dead raid.

Back to boss list

Supremus

Supremus is a two-phase movement fight. The raid alternates between tank phase and kite phase while avoiding volcanoes and ground damage.

What this fight tests: movement, kiting awareness, not standing in fire, and tank positioning.

Key mechanics:

  • Supremus
  • Tank phase — tank controls boss normally.
  • Kite phase — Supremus fixates and chases players.
  • Volcanoes — fire hazards that must be avoided.
  • Molten Flame — ground fire trail / danger zone.

Strategy:

  • During tank phase, tanks position Supremus safely and raid DPSes normally.
  • During kite phase, the fixated player runs away and avoids dragging Supremus through the raid.
  • Everyone avoids volcanoes and fire trails.
  • Do not stand still if Supremus is moving toward you.
  • Ranged can continue damage where safe, but survival matters more than uptime.
  • When tank phase returns, tanks pick Supremus back up cleanly.

Common mistakes:

  • Fixated player panics and runs through raid
  • Players stand in volcano damage
  • Raid keeps casting instead of moving
  • Tanks are slow to re-establish control
  • Melee chase during unsafe movement

Supremus is easy when people move early. It becomes messy when players try to greed damage through obvious ground danger.

Back to boss list

Shade of Akama

Shade of Akama is an add-control and channeler-priority fight. The raid must free Akama by killing the channelers and controlling incoming adds.

What this fight tests: add control, kill priority, tank assignment, and raid focus.

Key mechanics:

  • Shade of Akama
  • Ashtongue Channelers — must be killed to free Akama.
  • Incoming adds — must be tanked, controlled, and killed.
  • Final burn — Shade becomes active and must be killed quickly.

Strategy:

  • Assign tanks to incoming add paths.
  • DPS focuses channelers first to release Akama.
  • Control and kill dangerous adds without letting them reach healers.
  • Once channelers are dead and Shade becomes active, burn the boss.
  • Do not let add control collapse during the transition.

Common mistakes:

  • DPS split between adds and channelers with no clear priority
  • Incoming adds loose on healers
  • Channelers left alive too long
  • Raid loses control during final burn

Shade of Akama is mostly a control fight. Kill the right targets and it becomes straightforward.

Back to boss list

Teron Gorefiend

Teron Gorefiend is the classic personal responsibility check. Players targeted by the ghost mechanic must control constructs correctly. If they fail, the raid gets overwhelmed.

What this fight tests: personal responsibility, ghost control, raid DPS, and target discipline.

Key mechanics:

  • Teron Gorefiend
  • Shadow of Death — turns a player into a ghost after death.
  • Shadowy Constructs — must be controlled and killed by ghost players.
  • Crushing Shadows — increases Shadow damage taken.
  • Incinerate — dangerous debuff that should be handled quickly.

Strategy:

  • Tank Teron in the assigned position.
  • Raid spreads enough to handle debuffs and healing.
  • If you get Shadow of Death, prepare to become a ghost.
  • Ghost player must use ghost abilities to slow, root, and kill constructs.
  • Constructs must not reach the raid.
  • Raid continues boss damage while ghost players handle their job.
  • Healers keep the raid stable through debuffs and tank damage.

Ghost player priority:

  1. Control constructs immediately
  2. Slow/root constructs
  3. Kill constructs before they reach raid
  4. Communicate if something goes wrong

Common mistakes:

  • Player does not know ghost abilities
  • Constructs reach the raid
  • Raid ignores construct danger
  • Debuffs not handled cleanly
  • DPS too low and too many ghost cycles happen

Teron is the fight where one player can wipe the raid. If you are assigned by Shadow of Death, your job matters more than your parse.

Back to boss list

Gurtogg Bloodboil

Gurtogg Bloodboil is a healing, rotation, and survival fight. The raid must handle Bloodboil group rotations and survive Fel Rage phases.

What this fight tests: group positioning, healer assignments, tank swaps, and emergency healing.

Key mechanics:

  • Gurtogg Bloodboil
  • Bloodboil — stacking debuff applied to the furthest players / assigned groups.
  • Fel Rage — targets a player and massively changes damage/healing requirements.
  • Acidic Wound / tank pressure — requires tank planning.

Strategy:

  • Assign three ranged groups for Bloodboil rotation.
  • Only the assigned group should be furthest away when their turn comes.
  • Rotate groups cleanly so stacks are controlled.
  • Tanks manage boss positioning and threat.
  • When Fel Rage targets a player, healers swap heavily to that player.
  • Fel Rage target focuses on survival, not damage greed.
  • After Fel Rage, raid returns to normal positioning and rotation.

Common mistakes:

  • Bloodboil groups not rotating correctly
  • Wrong players standing furthest out
  • Fel Rage target not healed aggressively
  • Healers not ready for sudden target swap
  • Tanks mishandle threat/positioning after phase shifts

Bloodboil is a healer coordination fight. If healing assignments are vague, Fel Rage will expose it quickly.

Back to boss list

Reliquary of Souls

Reliquary of Souls is a three-phase discipline fight. Each phase changes the rules. The raid must adjust quickly and avoid playing every phase the same way.

What this fight tests: phase awareness, interrupts, threat control, resource management, and disciplined DPS.

Key phases:

  • Essence of Suffering — healing is heavily restricted; threat rules feel different.
  • Essence of Desire — raid takes reflected damage; interrupts matter.
  • Essence of Anger — escalating damage and threat pressure.

Phase 1: Essence of Suffering

Strategy:

  • Understand that normal healing is restricted.
  • Players must avoid unnecessary damage.
  • Tanks and DPS need to follow the phase-specific threat plan.
  • Do not treat this like a normal tank-and-spank.

Phase 2: Essence of Desire

Strategy:

  • Interrupt dangerous casts consistently.
  • DPS must watch reflected damage and not kill themselves.
  • Healers keep raid stable but players must help by controlling their own output.
  • Use cooldowns carefully, not blindly.

Phase 3: Essence of Anger

Strategy:

  • Tank threat and survivability become urgent.
  • DPS should burn hard but respect threat.
  • Healers prepare for escalating damage.
  • Use cooldowns to finish before pressure becomes unmanageable.

Common mistakes:

  • Players do not understand phase-specific rules
  • Interrupts missed in Phase 2
  • DPS kills itself with reflected damage
  • Threat ignored in Phase 3
  • Raid enters each phase unprepared

Reliquary is not one fight. It is three different rule sets back-to-back. Explain each phase before pulling.

Back to boss list

Mother Shahraz

Mother Shahraz is the Shadow Resistance check of Black Temple. The fight has heavy raid-wide Shadow damage, dangerous teleport mechanics, and tank cleave requirements.

What this fight tests: Shadow Resistance preparation, tank stacking, raid spread, teleport recovery, and healer coverage.

Key mechanics:

  • Mother Shahraz
  • Saber Lash — cleave split between tanks; multiple tanks stack in front.
  • Fatal Attraction — teleports linked players together; they must spread away quickly.
  • Prismatic Aura / Shadow damage — heavy raid-wide resistance pressure.
  • Beam mechanics — avoid and react to raid damage patterns.

Recommended setup:

  • 3 tanks stacked for Saber Lash
  • High Shadow Resistance on non-tanks where required
  • Healers spread to cover the raid
  • Raid members ready to move instantly after Fatal Attraction

Strategy:

  • Three tanks stack in front of Shahraz to split Saber Lash.
  • Raid spreads behind and around the boss, not in front.
  • Non-tanks wear Shadow Resistance gear according to raid strategy.
  • When Fatal Attraction hits, linked players move away from each other immediately.
  • Do not run through the raid with Fatal Attraction.
  • Healers cover both tanks and raid-wide Shadow damage.
  • DPS keeps steady pressure while prioritising survival.

Common mistakes:

  • Raid lacks Shadow Resistance
  • Tanks not stacked properly for Saber Lash
  • Fatal Attraction players do not spread
  • Fatal Attraction dragged through raid
  • Healers clumped or unable to cover the room
  • Players stand in front of boss

Mother Shahraz is a prep check. If the raid does not bring Shadow Resistance and movement discipline, the fight feels much harder than it should.

Back to boss list

The Illidari Council

The Illidari Council is a multi-boss control fight. You fight four council members at the same time, sharing a health pool, while managing interrupts, movement, tanking, and kill discipline.

What this fight tests: multi-target control, tank assignments, interrupts, dispels, movement, and raid patience.

Council members:

  • The Illidari Council
  • Gathios the Shatterer — Paladin-style tank target.
  • High Nethermancer Zerevor — Mage-style caster requiring careful handling.
  • Lady Malande — Priest-style caster with heals and dangerous spells.
  • Veras Darkshadow — Rogue-style target with poison/vanish pressure.

Strategy:

  • Assign tanks/handlers to each council member.
  • Keep dangerous caster targets controlled and interrupted.
  • Interrupt Lady Malande’s heals and dangerous casts.
  • Move out of ground effects immediately.
  • Raid DPS follows the assigned target plan while respecting shared health.
  • Healers cover multiple tank targets and raid damage.
  • Do not tunnel so hard that interrupts or movement fail.

Common mistakes:

  • Interrupts missed on Lady Malande
  • Zerevor mishandled
  • Ground effects ignored
  • Tanks not assigned clearly
  • Raid DPS split in a way that breaks control
  • Healers overwhelmed by poor positioning

Council is not about tunnelling one target. It is about keeping four dangerous enemies controlled until the shared health pool is gone.

Back to boss list

Illidan Stormrage

Illidan is the final boss of Black Temple and one of the most iconic encounters in TBC. The fight has multiple phases, special tank assignments, fire elemental control, demon phase handling, Shadow Resistance planning for the ranged tank, and final burn execution.

What this fight tests: tank assignments, phase transitions, fire positioning, ranged tanking, raid spread, demon control, cooldown timing, and long-fight composure.

Core phases:

  1. Phase 1: Illidan active
  2. Phase 2: Flames of Azzinoth
  3. Phase 3: Illidan active again
  4. Phase 4: Demon phase
  5. Phase 5: Final phase with Maiev support

Phase 1: Illidan Active

Key mechanics:

  • Shear — dangerous tank mechanic; tank must avoid/mitigate correctly.
  • Flame Crash — move boss/raid out of blue fire.
  • Draw Soul — frontal cone; keep Illidan faced away from raid.
  • Parasitic Shadowfiend — affected players move away and adds are controlled.

Strategy:

  • Main tank positions Illidan facing away from the raid.
  • Tank must handle Shear properly with avoidance/blocking strategy.
  • Raid avoids Flame Crash ground fire.
  • Players with Parasitic Shadowfiend move out so adds can be handled safely.
  • DPS controls threat and does not stand in front of Illidan.

Phase 2: Flames of Azzinoth

Key mechanics:

  • Flames of Azzinoth — two flame adds must be tanked separately.
  • Eye Beam — deadly beam movement; avoid immediately.
  • Blaze / fire patches — flame tanks control positioning carefully.

Strategy:

  • Two Fire Resistance tanks pick up the Flames of Azzinoth.
  • Each flame is tanked near its assigned blade area.
  • Flame tanks move carefully to control fire patches.
  • Raid avoids Eye Beam at all costs.
  • DPS kills one flame, then the other, according to raid plan.
  • Healers focus heavily on flame tanks during this phase.

Common Phase 2 mistakes:

  • Fire tanks not geared or assigned properly
  • Flames dragged too far from their blades
  • Eye Beam kills players
  • Fire patches placed badly
  • DPS split poorly between flames

Phase 3: Illidan Returns

Strategy:

  • Main tank picks Illidan back up cleanly.
  • Raid returns to Phase 1-style positioning.
  • Continue handling Shear, Flame Crash, Draw Soul, and Parasitic Shadowfiends.
  • Prepare for demon phase transitions.

Phase 4: Demon Phase

Key mechanics:

  • Demon Form — Illidan becomes a ranged-tank-style encounter.
  • Shadow Blast — heavy Shadow damage on the ranged/Warlock tank.
  • Flame Burst / raid damage — raid spreads and survives.
  • Shadow Demons — must be killed quickly before reaching targets.

Strategy:

  • Assigned Warlock/ranged tank with Shadow Resistance handles demon phase.
  • Raid spreads to reduce demon phase damage.
  • Shadow Demons are killed immediately.
  • Targets of Shadow Demons need help quickly.
  • Healers focus the ranged tank and raid damage.
  • Raid prepares for Illidan to return to normal form.

Common demon phase mistakes:

  • Warlock/ranged tank not prepared with Shadow Resistance
  • Raid too stacked
  • Shadow Demons not killed quickly
  • Healers not assigned to ranged tank
  • Transition back to normal phase mishandled

Phase 5: Final Phase

Strategy:

  • Continue handling the normal Illidan mechanics.
  • Use Maiev trap support where strategy requires it.
  • Keep boss positioning stable.
  • Continue handling Shadowfiends and ground effects.
  • Use final cooldowns once the raid is stable.
  • Do not tunnel so hard that basic mechanics fail at the end.

Common Illidan mistakes:

  • Main tank fails Shear handling
  • Raid stands in Flame Crash
  • Illidan faces raid and Draw Soul hits multiple players
  • Fire tanks mishandle Flames of Azzinoth
  • Players die to Eye Beam
  • Warlock/ranged tank not prepared for demon phase
  • Shadow Demons reach targets
  • Final burn tunnel vision

Illidan is not one hard mechanic. It is a long fight where every role has to keep doing their job through multiple phase changes.

Back to boss list

10. Trash Packs That Actually Matter

Black Temple trash is a real part of the raid. It can drain time, consume focus, and punish lazy pulls.

Good trash habits:

  • Let tanks pull.
  • Mark dangerous targets.
  • Use crowd control where useful.
  • Interrupt dangerous casts.
  • Do not AoE before tanks have control.
  • Watch patrols and line-of-sight pulls.
  • Keep healers in range before engaging.
  • Recover quickly after bad pulls instead of chain-wiping.

Trash danger points:

  • Large packs before and between bosses
  • Caster-heavy trash requiring interrupts
  • Temple areas where body pulls can chain
  • Long runbacks if the raid wipes carelessly
  • Shadow Resistance / Heart of Darkness-related farming and crafting pressure

Trash wipes are not just repair costs. They steal time from the fights that actually need practice.

11. Common Black Temple Wipe Causes

Most Black Temple wipes come from predictable assignment, movement, or preparation failures.

Naj’entus wipe causes:

  • Shield broken too early
  • Spines not removed
  • Raid not topped before shield break

Supremus wipe causes:

  • Players stand in volcano/fire
  • Fixated player runs through raid
  • Tanks slow to regain control

Akama wipe causes:

  • Channelers not killed fast enough
  • Adds loose on healers
  • DPS split with no priority

Teron wipe causes:

  • Ghost player cannot control constructs
  • Constructs reach raid
  • Debuffs mishandled

Bloodboil wipe causes:

  • Group rotation wrong
  • Fel Rage target not healed
  • Wrong players take Bloodboil stacks

Reliquary wipe causes:

  • Players do not understand phase rules
  • Interrupts missed
  • DPS kills itself through reflected damage
  • Threat ignored in final phase

Mother Shahraz wipe causes:

  • Raid lacks Shadow Resistance
  • Fatal Attraction movement failed
  • Tanks not stacked for Saber Lash
  • Raid stands in front of boss

Council wipe causes:

  • Interrupts missed
  • Council members mishandled
  • Ground effects ignored
  • Tank assignments unclear

Illidan wipe causes:

  • Shear handling failed
  • Flame tanks not prepared
  • Eye Beam deaths
  • Demon phase tank not prepared
  • Shadow Demons not killed
  • Final burn tunnel vision

Easy fixes:

  • Use Raid Planner for boss assignments before raid.
  • Run Raid Check before invites.
  • Check Shadow Resistance before Mother Shahraz night.
  • Confirm Illidan tank assignments early.
  • Make Teron ghost players practice or review the mechanic.
  • Assign Reliquary interrupts clearly.
  • Do not treat trash as downtime.

Black Temple progression is not about heroic speeches after wipes. It is about removing ambiguity before the pull.

12. How EpicForge Helps

Black Temple is exactly the kind of raid where EpicForge can save time before the group zones in.

Use EpicForge before Black Temple to:

  • Look up each character before invites
  • Check missing gems and enchants
  • Review obvious gear gaps
  • Check tanks before assigning Illidan, Shahraz, Council, or Bloodboil roles
  • Compare characters if deciding between alts or fills
  • Use Raid Planner to build the 25-player roster
  • Use Raid Planner to assign Shadow Resistance checks
  • Use Raid Planner to assign Teron ghost review, Reliquary interrupts, Council tanks, and Illidan tanks
  • Use Raid Check to catch raid-wide prep issues
  • Track linked characters and alts that can support the raid
  • Share character links in Discord before raid night

Good EpicForge pre-raid workflow:

  1. Create or review the Black Temple roster in Raid Planner.
  2. Check tanks and special assignment players first.
  3. Confirm Shadow Resistance status before Mother Shahraz progression.
  4. Confirm Illidan flame tanks and ranged/Warlock tank.
  5. Assign Bloodboil group rotation.
  6. Assign Reliquary interrupts.
  7. Assign Council tanks and interrupt targets.
  8. Check healers for gear, enchants, and mana sustain.
  9. Run Raid Check before final invites.
  10. Fix easy issues before pulling Naj’entus.

EpicForge will not dodge Eye Beam or kill Teron ghosts for you, but it can help make sure the right people are geared, assigned, and ready before the fight starts.

13. Quick Summary

  • Black Temple is a 25-player Tier 6 raid in Shadowmoon Valley.
  • It has nine bosses and ends with Illidan Stormrage.
  • Naj’entus requires spine handling and shield break timing.
  • Supremus requires movement and kite awareness.
  • Shade of Akama requires add and channeler control.
  • Teron Gorefiend requires ghost players to control constructs.
  • Gurtogg Bloodboil requires group rotation and Fel Rage healing.
  • Reliquary of Souls requires phase-specific discipline.
  • Mother Shahraz requires Shadow Resistance planning and Fatal Attraction movement.
  • Illidari Council requires multi-boss assignments and interrupts.
  • Illidan requires main tank, flame tanks, demon/ranged tank planning, and clean phase execution.
  • Use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before raid night, not after wipes start.

Why This Matters

Black Temple is where TBC raids need to become consistent. It is not enough to have a few strong players or good damage. The raid needs assignment discipline, resistance prep, clean trash, personal responsibility, and calm execution deep into the night.

A prepared raid with finished gems and enchants, proper Shadow Resistance planning, assigned tanks, reliable interrupts, and clear Illidan roles will progress far faster than a stronger-looking raid that improvises every pull.

Do the prep, assign the jobs, check the roster, and treat Black Temple as the raid where your team proves it can execute from the first pull to Illidan.
