Gruul's Lair Guide

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Gruul’s Lair is one of the first 25-player raid checks in TBC. It is short, but it is not free. There are only two bosses, yet both punish messy assignments, weak tanks, poor threat control, bad positioning, and players who show up underprepared.

This guide is built as a practical raid-readiness and strategy guide: raid setup, consumables, role prep, High King Maulgar assignments, Gruul positioning, key mechanics, common wipe causes, and how to use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before zoning in.

Quick Navigation

Important: Gruul’s Lair is short, so people often underestimate it. That is exactly why raids wipe here. You do not need 20 pages of theory, but you do need clear assignments.

1. Gruul’s Lair Overview

Gruul’s Lair is a 25-player raid located in Blade’s Edge Mountains. It contains two bosses: High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller.

Basic raid details:

  • Raid size: 25 players
  • Location: Blade’s Edge Mountains
  • Boss count: 2
  • Bosses: High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller
  • Primary loot value: Tier 4 tokens, strong early raid gear, and high-value items such as Dragonspine Trophy

Why Gruul’s Lair matters:

  • It is one of the first 25-player raid checks after Karazhan.
  • It tests whether your raid can handle assignments across more than 10 players.
  • High King Maulgar checks role coordination and add control.
  • Gruul checks tank threat, raid spread, healer endurance, and DPS pace.
  • It gives important early raid loot and Tier 4 progression pieces.

Gruul’s Lair is not long, but it is a very good test of whether your raid can move from 10-player organisation into 25-player discipline.

2. Access and Location

Gruul’s Lair is found in Blade’s Edge Mountains, north of Ruuan Weald. The entrance is inside the gronn-themed cave area.

Access checklist:

  • Be level 70 or raid-ready for level 70 content.
  • Have the raid physically travel to Blade’s Edge Mountains or summon players.
  • Confirm everyone has repairs, consumes, reagents, ammo, soul shards, poisons, and class items.
  • Confirm your raid is set to 25-player raid mode.

Do not treat Gruul’s Lair like a quick loot stop if half the raid is missing consumes or assignments. The raid is short, but the pulls punish lazy setup.

3. Recommended Raid Composition

Gruul’s Lair needs more planning than Karazhan because High King Maulgar requires several different tanks or tank-style assignments at once.

Safe progression setup:

  • 4-5 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 6-7 healers
  • 13-15 DPS

Farm setup:

  • 3-4 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 5-6 healers
  • 15-17 DPS

Useful tools for High King Maulgar:

Useful tools for Gruul:

  • Strong main tank
  • Strong off-tank for Hurtful Strike
  • Raid-wide stamina buffs
  • Healers who can manage mana over a longer fight
  • Players who can spread quickly after Ground Slam

High King Maulgar is the assignment check. Gruul is the survival check. Build the raid for both, not just raw DPS.

4. Pre-Raid Checklist

Gruul’s Lair is short enough that you should be able to check the raid before the first pull.

Character readiness:

  • Gear repaired
  • Correct spec for assigned role
  • Correct weapons and trinkets equipped
  • All reasonable gear enchanted
  • All sockets filled
  • Meta gem active if using one
  • Food, flask/elixirs, potions, bandages, reagents, and class items ready
  • Threat tools and cooldowns keybound

Raid readiness:

  • Main tank assigned for High King Maulgar
  • Tank assigned for Blindeye
  • Mage tank assigned for Krosh
  • Tank/control assigned for Olm
  • Ranged tank/kite assignment for Kiggler
  • Kill order confirmed
  • Gruul main tank and Hurtful Strike off-tank assigned
  • Healer assignments confirmed
  • Loot rules clear before pull

If you pull High King Maulgar without assignments, you are not “saving time”. You are donating repair gold.

5. Consumables and Buffs

Gruul’s Lair is early raid content, but that does not mean consumes are optional. Both fights are easier when players show up properly prepared.

Baseline for everyone:

  • Food buff
  • Flask or battle/guardian elixir setup
  • Healing or mana potions as appropriate
  • Class reagents
  • Weapon oil, sharpening stone, or weightstone if relevant
  • Bandages
  • Repair gold

Useful food examples:

Useful potion examples:

Useful flask examples:

Gruul gets more dangerous the longer the fight goes. Consumables do not just increase parses; they reduce the chance your raid runs out of healing, time, or space.

6. Role-by-Role Prep

Tanks

Tanks should check:

  • Defensive gear ready
  • Threat gear available if survivability is comfortable
  • Shield equipped where needed
  • Cooldowns planned for Maulgar and Gruul damage spikes
  • Positioning assignments understood before the pull
  • Off-tank ready to stay second on threat for Gruul

The Gruul off-tank is not optional. Hurtful Strike targets the second-highest threat target in melee range, so the off-tank needs to be in position and high on threat.

Healers

Healers should check:

  • Tank assignments for each Maulgar target
  • Mage tank healing assignment for Krosh
  • Raid healing coverage for Gruul’s Shatter
  • Mana potions ready
  • Efficient healing plan for longer Gruul attempts
  • Cooldowns ready for late Growth stacks

Gruul can feel fine early, then suddenly become dangerous as Growth stacks increase. Healers need to manage mana, not panic-spam from the first minute.

DPS

DPS should check:

  • Correct kill order understood for High King Maulgar
  • Interrupts and stuns ready for Blindeye
  • Threat control ready
  • Personal spread awareness for Gruul
  • Consumes ready
  • Gems and enchants finished

DPS that cannot swap target, interrupt, or stop threat is a liability in Gruul’s Lair. Pumping is good. Pumping into the wrong target is not.

7. Recommended Clear Order

Gruul’s Lair is simple in route but demanding in execution.

  1. Clear trash carefully
  2. High King Maulgar
  3. Gruul the Dragonkiller

Why this matters:

  • Maulgar tests assignments and pull control.
  • Gruul tests survival, threat, spreading, and DPS pace.
  • If Maulgar is chaotic, Gruul will usually expose the same raid discipline problems.

Treat Maulgar as the gatekeeper. A clean Maulgar kill usually means your raid has enough organisation to give Gruul serious attempts.

8. Boss-by-Boss Strategy Guide

Gruul’s Lair only has two bosses, but both need proper assignments. Do not let the short raid size trick you into under-planning the fights.

High King Maulgar

High King Maulgar is a council-style fight. You fight High King Maulgar and four adds at once: Blindeye the Seer, Olm the Summoner, Krosh Firehand, and Kiggler the Crazed.

What this fight tests: assignments, pull control, target priority, unusual tanking jobs, interrupts, and raid discipline.

  1. Blindeye the Seer
  2. Olm the Summoner
  3. Krosh Firehand
  4. Kiggler the Crazed
  5. High King Maulgar

Some raids adjust the order depending on comp, but the standard priority is to kill Blindeye first because his healing can undo progress.

Assignment Overview

  • Main tank: High King Maulgar
  • Off-tank: Blindeye the Seer
  • Warlock tank / control: Olm the Summoner
  • Mage tank: Krosh Firehand
  • Moonkin / ranged tank setup: Kiggler the Crazed

Key Maulgar abilities:

Pull Setup

The pull is the most dangerous part of the fight. Every add needs to move to its assigned place quickly without crossing into the raid or killing healers.

  • Main tank immediately picks up High King Maulgar and positions him near a wall.
  • Blindeye tank grabs Blindeye and moves him into the kill zone.
  • Mage tank grabs Krosh and keeps distance from the raid.
  • Warlock/control player handles Olm and his summoned Felhunters.
  • Kiggler tank/kiter takes Kiggler away from the raid.
  • Hunters can use Misdirection to help stabilise dangerous targets.

Do not start heavy AoE or cleave before assignments are stable. The pull is controlled chaos; give the assigned tanks a few seconds to make it controlled.

Blindeye the Seer

Blindeye the Seer is the healer. He needs to die first or be heavily interrupted.

What to do:

  • DPS opens on Blindeye after the tank has control.
  • Break his shield quickly when he shields himself.
  • Interrupt his heal as soon as the shield is broken.
  • Use stuns, interrupts, and silence effects where available.

Good tools:

Common mistake: DPS fails to break the shield fast enough, the heal goes off, and the raid loses momentum immediately.

Olm the Summoner

Olm the Summoner summons Felhunters and applies pressure through control and damage.

What to do:

  • Assign a Warlock or tank/control player to manage Olm.
  • Use Warlock utility to control or enslave Felhunters where your strategy allows.
  • Keep Olm away from the raid enough that his disruption does not create chaos.
  • Kill him after Blindeye.

Common mistake: Felhunters and Olm are left unmanaged, causing healer pressure and loose damage while DPS is still on Blindeye.

Krosh Firehand

Krosh Firehand is usually tanked by a Mage because of his spell shield interaction.

What to do:

  • Mage tank keeps Krosh away from the raid.
  • Mage uses Spellsteal to steal Krosh’s shield.
  • Healers assigned to the Mage tank must be ready before the pull.
  • Melee should generally avoid Krosh because of dangerous fire damage around him.
  • Ranged DPS can help kill Krosh once higher-priority targets are dead.

Common mistake: Mage tank does not steal the shield, stands too close to the raid, or gets no dedicated healing.

Kiggler the Crazed

Kiggler the Crazed is usually handled by a Moonkin Druid or ranged tank/kite setup because he uses ranged arcane abilities and Greater Polymorph.

What to do:

  • Keep Kiggler far away from the main raid.
  • Use a Moonkin Druid if available because Moonkin form avoids the Polymorph issue.
  • If no Moonkin is available, use two ranged players so one can hold threat if the other is polymorphed.
  • Do not drag Kiggler through the raid.
  • Kill him after Krosh or once the raid is stable.

Common mistake: Kiggler is not assigned properly, polymorphs the tank target, then runs loose into healers or ranged.

High King Maulgar

Once the council is dead, the raid swaps to High King Maulgar.

Strategy:

  • Main tank keeps Maulgar near a wall with the boss faced away from the raid.
  • Melee avoid standing in front because of frontal damage.
  • Melee must respect Whirlwind. Back out early instead of trying to squeeze one more hit.
  • At lower health, Maulgar becomes more chaotic with fear/charge-style behaviour.
  • Tanks should be ready to taunt and reposition him if he charges into the raid.
  • Use cooldowns late if tank damage or raid positioning becomes unstable.

Common mistakes:

  • Unclear pull assignments
  • Blindeye heal not interrupted
  • Mage tank not ready for Krosh
  • Kiggler loose in the raid
  • Maulgar facing the raid
  • Melee dying to Whirlwind
  • Tanks not recovering after fear/charge disruption

High King Maulgar is won before the pull. If every add has a clear assignment, the fight becomes manageable. If not, it becomes a 25-player mess instantly.

Back to boss list

Gruul the Dragonkiller

Gruul the Dragonkiller is a survival and DPS race. The fight is mechanically simple, but the raid takes increasing pressure over time because of Growth. The longer the fight goes, the harder Gruul hits.

What this fight tests: tank threat, off-tank threat, raid spread, movement after knockbacks, healer endurance, and DPS pace.

Key abilities:

  • Growth — increases Gruul’s damage every 30 seconds.
  • Hurtful Strike — hits the second-highest threat target in melee range.
  • Cave In — falling rocks; move out.
  • Ground Slam — knocks players around and begins the Shatter sequence.
  • Gronn Lord's Grasp — slows players before Shatter.
  • Shatter — deals damage based on how close players are to each other.

Positioning

  • Main tank pulls Gruul and holds him near the centre of the room.
  • Off-tank stands in melee range and builds strong threat to soak Hurtful Strike.
  • Melee stand behind Gruul but must be ready to move for Cave In and the Shatter sequence.
  • Ranged and healers spread around the room.
  • Everyone needs room to move away from others after Ground Slam.

The off-tank must stay second on threat and in melee range. If the off-tank is not a valid Hurtful Strike target, Gruul can kill a melee DPS or cause a tank death spiral.

Fight Flow

  1. Main tank pulls Gruul and establishes threat.
  2. Off-tank immediately builds threat and stays in melee range.
  3. DPS waits briefly, then starts controlled damage.
  4. Raid spreads and avoids Cave In.
  5. Gruul gains Growth over time, increasing pressure.
  6. When Ground Slam happens, players are knocked around.
  7. During Gronn Lord's Grasp, move away from other players as much as possible.
  8. Shatter hits based on proximity. The farther apart players are, the less damage they take.
  9. Healers top the raid after Shatter and tanks stabilise Gruul.
  10. Repeat until Gruul dies or Growth stacks become too much to survive.

Hurtful Strike Handling

Hurtful Strike is one of the most important mechanics in the fight. It targets the second-highest threat player in melee range.

What to do:

  • Assign a dedicated off-tank to soak Hurtful Strike.
  • Off-tank must stay in melee range at all times unless mechanics force movement.
  • Off-tank must stay second on threat.
  • Melee DPS must stay below the off-tank on threat.
  • Healers should treat the off-tank as a real tank, not a random DPS taking cleave.

Common Hurtful Strike mistakes:

  • Off-tank too far away
  • Off-tank not high enough on threat
  • Melee DPS overtakes the off-tank
  • Healers focus only the main tank and let the off-tank die
  • Pets or random melee accidentally causing confusion around threat

Ground Slam and Shatter Handling

The most raid-wiping sequence is Ground Slam into Gronn Lord's Grasp into Shatter.

What happens:

  • Gruul knocks players around with Ground Slam.
  • Players are slowed by Gronn Lord’s Grasp.
  • Players must move away from each other while slowed.
  • Shatter deals damage based on proximity to other players.

What to do:

  • As soon as Ground Slam happens, check where you landed.
  • Move away from nearby players immediately.
  • Do not run through the group.
  • Use camera angle and nameplates to find open space.
  • If you cannot get far away, at least avoid stacking directly on another player.
  • Healers should prepare raid healing immediately after Shatter.

The difference between a clean Gruul kill and a wipe is often whether players spread properly before Shatter. This is a personal responsibility mechanic.

Cave In Handling

Cave In causes rocks to fall in a targeted area.

What to do:

  • Move out quickly.
  • Do not finish a cast if it means standing in damage.
  • Melee should move if Cave In appears under Gruul or near the boss.
  • Healers should not stand still and eat Cave In just to finish one heal.

Common mistake: players treat Cave In as minor damage early, then die to it later when Growth stacks and raid damage are already high.

Healer Strategy

  • Assign healers to main tank and off-tank.
  • Keep the off-tank topped for Hurtful Strike.
  • Use efficient healing early because Gruul gets more dangerous over time.
  • Prepare raid healing after Shatter.
  • Use bigger cooldowns late as Growth stacks rise.

DPS Strategy

  • Wait for tank and off-tank threat.
  • Do not overtake the off-tank if you are melee.
  • Move out of Cave In immediately.
  • Spread properly for Shatter.
  • Use cooldowns when the raid leader calls for burn, not while tanks are still establishing control.

Common Gruul Mistakes

  • Off-tank not soaking Hurtful Strike properly
  • Melee DPS passing the off-tank on threat
  • Players stacking before Shatter
  • Slow movement out of Cave In
  • Healers running out of mana from inefficient early healing
  • DPS too low, causing Growth stacks to become unmanageable
  • Raid panicking after one bad Shatter instead of stabilising

Gruul is simple, but not forgiving. Stay spread, keep the off-tank second on threat, move out of Cave In, and kill him before Growth stacks bury the raid.

9. Trash Packs That Actually Matter

Gruul’s Lair trash is not the main event, but sloppy trash can still waste time and cooldowns.

Good trash habits:

  • Let tanks pull.
  • Use line of sight where useful.
  • Mark dangerous targets.
  • Interrupt casters.
  • Do not AoE before tanks have control.
  • Keep the raid together and ready for the next pull.

Common trash mistakes:

  • Body-pulling extra packs
  • DPS opening too early
  • Players standing away from the raid and delaying pulls
  • Healers drinking while tanks rush without checking mana

Gruul’s Lair is short. Clean trash keeps it short. Messy trash turns a quick raid into a repair bill.

10. Common Gruul’s Lair Wipe Causes

Most Gruul’s Lair wipes come from predictable setup problems.

High King Maulgar wipe causes:

  • No clear add assignments
  • Blindeye heal not interrupted
  • Mage tank not ready for Krosh
  • Kiggler not controlled properly
  • Olm and Felhunters causing chaos
  • Maulgar faced into the raid
  • Melee dying to Whirlwind

Gruul wipe causes:

  • Off-tank not soaking Hurtful Strike
  • Melee DPS overtaking off-tank threat
  • Players stacking for Shatter
  • Raid standing in Cave In
  • Healers running out of mana
  • DPS too low and Growth stacks getting too high

Easy fixes:

  • Use Raid Planner to confirm assignments before pull.
  • Run Raid Check before invites.
  • Check tanks and off-tanks first.
  • Assign Maulgar targets clearly.
  • Confirm the Gruul off-tank understands Hurtful Strike.
  • Tell the raid: Shatter spread is personal responsibility.

Gruul’s Lair does not need complicated raid leading. It needs clear assignments and players doing the simple things properly.

11. How EpicForge Helps

Gruul’s Lair is exactly the kind of raid where EpicForge can save time before the group zones in.

Use EpicForge before Gruul’s Lair to:

  • Look up each character before invites
  • Check missing gems and enchants
  • Review obvious gear gaps
  • Check tank readiness before assigning Maulgar or Gruul roles
  • Compare characters if deciding between alts or fills
  • Use Raid Planner to build the 25-player roster
  • Use Raid Check to catch raid-wide prep issues
  • Track linked characters and alts that can support the raid
  • Share character links in Discord before raid night

Good EpicForge pre-raid workflow:

  1. Create or review the Gruul’s Lair roster in Raid Planner.
  2. Check all tanks and special assignment players first.
  3. Confirm the Mage tank / Krosh assignment.
  4. Confirm the Olm and Kiggler control assignments.
  5. Check healers for gear, enchants, and mana sustain.
  6. Check DPS gems, enchants, and obvious gear issues.
  7. Run Raid Check before final invites.
  8. Fix easy issues before pulling High King Maulgar.

EpicForge will not do the fight for your raid, but it can show you which characters are unfinished before those issues become wipes.

12. Quick Summary

  • Gruul’s Lair is a 25-player raid in Blade’s Edge Mountains.
  • There are two bosses: High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller.
  • High King Maulgar is an assignment and control fight.
  • Blindeye should usually die first because of his healing.
  • Krosh is usually handled by a Mage tank using Spellsteal.
  • Kiggler needs a ranged or Moonkin-style tanking setup.
  • Maulgar should be tanked facing away with tank back near a wall.
  • Gruul requires a main tank and off-tank in melee range.
  • The off-tank must soak Hurtful Strike by staying second on threat.
  • Everyone must spread after Ground Slam before Shatter.
  • Move out of Cave In quickly.
  • Kill Gruul before Growth stacks become unmanageable.
  • Use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before raid night, not after wipes start.

Why This Matters

Gruul’s Lair is short, but it is a real 25-player coordination check. If your raid has sloppy assignments, unfinished characters, weak tanks, poor threat control, or players who refuse to spread, the raid will expose it fast.

A prepared raid with clean Maulgar assignments and disciplined Gruul positioning can clear the instance quickly. An unprepared raid can wipe for an hour on mechanics that are completely avoidable.

Do the prep, assign the jobs, check the roster, and treat Gruul’s Lair as the first real step from 10-player comfort into 25-player raid discipline.
