Tempest Keep / The Eye Guide

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Tempest Keep: The Eye is one of the major Tier 5 raids in TBC. It is a 25-player raid in Netherstorm with four bosses, ending with one of the most iconic and demanding encounters in the expansion: Kael'thas Sunstrider.

This guide is built as a practical raid-readiness and strategy guide: access, attunement notes, roster setup, consumables, role prep, boss order, boss-by-boss strategies, Kael’thas phase planning, common wipe causes, and how to use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before zoning in.

Quick Navigation

Important: The Eye is not just “SSC but shorter”. Al’ar tests movement and add control, Void Reaver tests spread and threat, Solarian tests bomb awareness, and Kael’thas tests nearly every part of your raid at once.

1. Tempest Keep / The Eye Overview

The Eye is the 25-player raid wing of Tempest Keep, located in Netherstorm. It contains four bosses and is one of the two main Tier 5 raids alongside Serpentshrine Cavern.

Basic raid details:

  • Raid size: 25 players
  • Location: Tempest Keep, Netherstorm
  • Boss count: 4
  • Final boss: Kael'thas Sunstrider
  • Tier loot: Tier 5 shoulder and chest tokens drop in The Eye
  • Notable rare reward: Ashes of Al'ar from Kael’thas

Boss list:

Why The Eye matters:

  • It is a major Tier 5 raid.
  • It contains one of the most famous final bosses in TBC.
  • It tests movement, spread, add control, threat, interrupts, legendary weapon handling, and raid-wide assignment discipline.
  • Kael’thas is a long multi-phase fight where one weak phase can ruin an otherwise clean pull.
  • It is a major checkpoint for raids moving deeper into TBC progression.

The Eye is not just a loot raid. It asks whether your raid can execute multiple different mechanics across a long night and then still stay clean on Kael’thas.

2. Access, Location, and Attunement

The Eye is located on the central floating structure of Tempest Keep in eastern Netherstorm. Players normally need flying or a summon to reach the entrance.

Access checklist:

  • Be level 70 and raid-ready.
  • Travel to Tempest Keep in Netherstorm.
  • Make sure players can fly to the entrance or are summoned.
  • Confirm your raid is set as a 25-player raid.
  • Check your server/phase rules for whether The Eye attunement is required for entry.

Historical Tempest Keep attunement:

  • The original attunement revolved around earning access through a long chain connected to the Tempest Key.
  • Later TBC Classic rulesets removed the hard entry requirement, but completing the old chain may still matter for completion or Hand of A’dal-style progression goals.
  • Check your current server/season rules before raid night so nobody gets locked out unexpectedly.

Practical raid-night access check:

  • Confirm summon team is ready at Tempest Keep.
  • Confirm nobody is stuck without flying or a summon.
  • Confirm everyone has repairs, food, flasks/elixirs, potions, reagents, ammo, soul shards, poisons, and class items.
  • Confirm Kael’thas weapon assignment notes before reaching the final boss.

Do not wait until pull time to find out someone cannot reach the entrance, is missing consumables, or has no idea what weapon they are meant to use on Kael’thas.

3. Recommended Raid Composition

The Eye needs a balanced 25-player roster. You need strong tanks, healers who can handle long fights, ranged players with movement awareness, melee who respect threat and mechanics, and a raid that can follow assignments.

Safe progression setup:

  • 3-4 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 7-8 healers
  • 13-15 DPS

Farm setup:

  • 2-3 tanks / tank-capable players
  • 6-7 healers
  • 15-17 DPS

Useful raid tools:

  • Hunters for Misdirection
  • Shamans for Bloodlust / Heroism
  • Mages and Warlocks for strong ranged damage and add control
  • Paladins for blessings, cleanse utility, and add-control/tanking options
  • Priests for healing, dispels, and raid utility
  • Druids for battle resurrection, innervate, and flexible roles
  • Reliable interrupts and stuns for trash and Kael’thas phases

Assignment-heavy fights:

  • Al’ar: platform tanks, phoenix add control, meteor/dive awareness
  • Void Reaver: spread, threat, orb movement
  • Solarian: bomb movement, add control, final phase handling
  • Kael’thas: advisor positioning, weapon assignments, legendary weapon pickups, mind control handling, Phoenix control, Gravity Lapse

The Eye rewards clean execution more than perfect class stacking. You still need enough utility to cover the mechanics, but the bigger issue is whether people actually do their jobs.

4. Pre-Raid Checklist

The Eye has several fights where a single bad assignment can cause a wipe. Check the roster and jobs before pulling.

Character readiness:

  • Gear repaired
  • Correct spec for assigned role
  • Correct weapons and trinkets equipped
  • All reasonable gear enchanted
  • All sockets filled
  • Meta gem active if using one
  • Food, flask/elixirs, potions, bandages, reagents, and class items ready
  • Threat tools, interrupts, and defensives keybound

Raid readiness:

  • Al’ar platform tank assignments confirmed
  • Al’ar phoenix add assignments confirmed
  • Void Reaver spread expectations explained
  • Solarian bomb movement explained
  • Kael’thas advisor positioning assigned
  • Kael’thas weapon kill order assigned
  • Kael’thas legendary weapon pickups assigned
  • Kael’thas Phoenix and egg control assigned
  • Healer assignments confirmed
  • Loot rules clear before pull

Kael’thas is too long to improvise. If weapon assignments are not clear before the pull, you are wasting everyone’s time.

5. Consumables and Buffs

The Eye progression can be long, especially while learning Kael’thas. Consumables help reduce phase length, healer strain, and the chance that one mistake snowballs into a wipe.

Baseline for everyone:

  • Food buff
  • Flask or battle/guardian elixir setup
  • Healing or mana potions as appropriate
  • Class reagents
  • Weapon oil, sharpening stone, or weightstone if relevant
  • Bandages
  • Repair gold

Useful food examples:

Useful potion examples:

Useful flask examples:

Kael’thas attempts are long. Consumables are not just about damage meters; they keep the raid stable through repeated phase transitions.

6. Role-by-Role Prep

Tanks

Tanks should check:

  • Defensive gear ready
  • Threat gear available if survivability is comfortable
  • Al’ar platform and phoenix assignments understood
  • Kael’thas advisor pickup positions understood
  • Kael’thas Phase 3 and Phase 4 tank responsibilities understood
  • Cooldowns ready for unstable phase transitions
  • Threat tools ready for weapon and Phoenix control where assigned

Kael’thas tanking is not just “hold boss”. You need advisor positioning, weapon phase control, Phoenix handling, and clean pickups after transitions.

Healers

Healers should check:

  • Tank assignments for each boss
  • Void Reaver ranged spread healing coverage
  • Solarian bomb movement awareness
  • Kael’thas advisor phase healing assignments
  • Kael’thas weapon phase raid damage coverage
  • Legendary weapon usage awareness if assigned
  • Mana sustain for long Kael attempts

The Eye healing is about staying calm through movement. Void Reaver, Solarian, and Kael all punish healers who tunnel frames and ignore positioning.

DPS

DPS should check:

  • Correct kill order for each boss
  • Threat control ready
  • Ability to swap quickly to adds, weapons, Phoenixes, and eggs
  • Void Reaver orb movement awareness
  • Solarian bomb movement understood
  • Kael’thas weapon assignment understood
  • Consumables ready
  • Gems and enchants finished

The Eye DPS is not just boss damage. If you cannot swap to adds, avoid orbs, move bombs, kill weapons, or control Phoenixes, your damage is not helping the raid.

7. Recommended Clear Order

The Eye has four bosses. Raids often adjust the first three depending on route, comfort, and progression goals, but Kael’thas is the final major wall.

Common progression route:

  1. Void Reaver
  2. High Astromancer Solarian
  3. Al’ar
  4. Kael’thas Sunstrider

Alternative route:

  1. Al’ar
  2. Void Reaver
  3. High Astromancer Solarian
  4. Kael’thas Sunstrider

Route advice:

  • Void Reaver is often treated as the simplest early target.
  • Solarian is manageable once players understand bomb movement.
  • Al’ar is more movement-heavy and can punish sloppy add control.
  • Kael’thas deserves dedicated progression time.

Do not burn all raid time before Kael’thas if your goal is progression. The final boss needs focus, clean comms, and repeated learning pulls.

8. Boss-by-Boss Strategy Guide

Each Eye boss tests a different part of the raid. The first three teach movement, spread, target swapping, and control. Kael’thas then combines all of those habits into one long fight.

Al’ar

Al’ar is a movement and add-control fight. The encounter uses upper platforms, tank movement, phoenix adds, fire patches, and a second phase where the raid must handle Dive Bomb / Meteor-style danger and Ember control.

What this fight tests: platform tank coordination, movement, add control, phoenix/ember handling, and fire awareness.

Key mechanics:

  • Al'ar — boss target.
  • Flame Quills — dangerous platform phase ability; clear the upper platforms quickly.
  • Ember of Al’ar — add that must be controlled and killed safely.
  • Rebirth — Al’ar transitions into Phase 2 after Phase 1.
  • Meteor / Dive Bomb-style impact — raid must avoid impact and handle resulting adds.
  • Flame Patch — move out of fire.

Recommended setup:

  • 2-3 tanks
  • 6-8 healers depending on progression
  • Ranged DPS assigned to adds where needed
  • Melee aware that uptime is less important than not dying to fire

Phase 1: Platforms

Strategy:

  • Assign tanks to handle Al’ar as he moves between upper platforms.
  • Tanks must be ready before Al’ar changes position.
  • Raid avoids standing on upper platforms during Flame Quills.
  • When Flame Quills begins, players on platforms move away immediately.
  • Handle Embers cleanly and avoid letting them explode in bad positions.
  • Do not chase the boss through dangerous platform movement if your assignment does not require it.

Common Phase 1 mistakes:

  • Tank not ready on the next platform
  • Players staying up during Flame Quills
  • Adds not controlled properly
  • Raid losing track of boss movement

Phase 2: Ground Phase

Strategy:

  • After Rebirth, tank Al’ar on the ground.
  • Raid spreads and stays aware of fire patches.
  • Move out of Flame Patch immediately.
  • When Al’ar uses Meteor / Dive Bomb-style mechanics, avoid the impact area.
  • Control and kill Embers after impact events.
  • Do not let add explosions happen in the middle of the raid.
  • Use cooldowns late if the fight becomes unstable.

DPS priority:

  1. Dangerous Embers / adds
  2. Al’ar

Common mistakes:

  • Standing in fire for uptime
  • Adds dying in bad positions
  • Tanks not coordinating transitions
  • Raid panicking during Phase 2 impacts
  • Healers not spread enough to cover movement

Al’ar is not hard because of one huge mechanic. It is hard when small movement mistakes stack up for several minutes.

Back to boss list

Void Reaver

Void Reaver is a spread, movement, and threat fight. The boss is mechanically simple, but he punishes players who ignore Arcane Orbs, stand too close, or pull threat.

What this fight tests: ranged spread, orb awareness, tank threat, melee discipline, and healer coverage.

Key mechanics:

  • Void Reaver — boss target.
  • Arcane Orb — targets ranged areas; move away before impact.
  • Pounding — raid-wide/melee-range pressure that healers must cover.
  • Knock Away — threat disruption on tanks; tanks need to manage threat.

Recommended setup:

  • 2-3 tanks
  • 6-7 healers
  • Ranged spread around the room
  • Melee aware of threat and boss movement

Strategy:

  • Tank Void Reaver in the centre or assigned area.
  • Ranged and healers spread around the room.
  • Move away from Arcane Orbs immediately when targeted.
  • Do not run through other players and cause extra orb chaos.
  • Tanks build and maintain strong threat because Knock Away can disrupt the main tank.
  • DPS should watch threat, especially early.
  • Healers prepare for Pounding damage and movement interruptions.

Common mistakes:

  • Ranged stacked too close together
  • Players not moving from Arcane Orbs
  • DPS pulling threat after tank knockback
  • Healers standing too far from assigned groups
  • Melee refusing to watch threat

Void Reaver is often called simple, but simple does not mean harmless. Spread, move from orbs, and respect threat.

Back to boss list

High Astromancer Solarian

Solarian is a bomb-awareness and add-control fight. Players must react properly to Arcane-style bomb mechanics, control add waves, and handle her final form cleanly.

What this fight tests: spread awareness, bomb movement, add control, and final-phase tank/healer stability.

Key mechanics:

  • High Astromancer Solarian — boss target.
  • Wrath of the Astromancer — bomb-style mechanic; affected player moves away.
  • Solarium Agents / Priests — add waves that must be controlled and killed.
  • Voidwalker form — final phase with different tank/healer priorities.

Recommended setup:

  • 1-2 tanks for boss/add handling
  • 6-7 healers
  • Strong AoE and add control
  • Players who can move bomb effects out quickly

Strategy:

  • Tank Solarian in the assigned area.
  • Raid spreads enough to react to bomb-style mechanics.
  • If you get Wrath of the Astromancer, move away from the raid immediately.
  • Do not carry the bomb through other players.
  • When add waves spawn, group and kill them cleanly.
  • Prioritise dangerous caster/healer-style adds where needed.
  • When Solarian transforms into her final Voidwalker phase, tank her securely and finish the fight.

DPS priority:

  1. Dangerous adds during add waves
  2. Solarian
  3. Final form burn once stable

Common mistakes:

  • Bomb player stands in the raid
  • Bomb player runs through the raid
  • Adds not controlled quickly
  • Healers clumped and punished by movement
  • Raid panics during final form

Solarian is mostly about not griefing the raid with the bomb. If you get the mechanic, move away fast and clean.

Back to boss list

Kael’thas Sunstrider

Kael’thas is the final boss of The Eye and one of the longest, most assignment-heavy fights in TBC. It has multiple phases involving advisors, legendary weapons, all advisors returning, Kael himself, Phoenixes, Mind Controls, Shock Barriers, Pyroblasts, Gravity Lapse, and final burn execution.

What this fight tests: planning, add control, kill order, weapon assignments, interrupts, legendary weapon usage, Phoenix control, tank cooldowns, spread, and raid composure.

Core fight phases:

  1. Phase 1: Advisors one at a time
  2. Phase 2: Legendary weapons
  3. Phase 3: Advisors return together
  4. Phase 4: Kael’thas active
  5. Phase 5: Gravity Lapse / final burn

Phase 1: Advisors One at a Time

Kael’thas sends his advisors one at a time. The goal is not just to kill them, but to position their corpses properly because they return later in Phase 3.

Advisors:

Strategy:

  • Kill each advisor in the planned location.
  • Do not drop advisor corpses randomly, because they revive in Phase 3.
  • Players targeted by Thaladred must kite him away and not get hit.
  • Capernian should be tanked by a ranged/fire-resistant style tank and kept away from the raid.
  • Telonicus and Sanguinar should be positioned for clean Phase 3 pickup.
  • Raid leader should remind the raid that Phase 1 positioning matters later.

Common Phase 1 mistakes:

  • Advisors die in bad positions
  • Thaladred target panics and runs through raid
  • Capernian too close to other players
  • Raid treats Phase 1 as free damage instead of setup

Phase 2: Legendary Weapons

Kael summons legendary weapons. The raid must kill them, then assigned players pick them up and use them for later mechanics.

Weapons:

Strategy:

  • Tank and group weapons according to your raid plan.
  • AoE and cleave carefully, but do not let weapons kill healers.
  • Kill priority should focus dangerous weapons and the raid’s assignment needs.
  • Assigned players must loot/pick up their weapons quickly.
  • Healers assigned to Cosmic Infuser should know their job.
  • Players assigned to Staff of Disintegration should understand its use for raid protection.
  • Tanks assigned to Phaseshift Bulwark should be ready for Kael tanking.

Common Phase 2 mistakes:

  • Weapons not grouped or controlled properly
  • Assigned players fail to pick up weapons
  • Wrong players take critical weapons
  • DPS split badly and weapon phase runs too long
  • Healers not ready for damage during weapon chaos

Weapon assignments should be written down before the pull. Do not decide who gets what after the weapons are already dead.

Phase 3: Advisors Return Together

All four advisors revive together. This phase is where poor Phase 1 corpse placement becomes a wipe.

Strategy:

  • Tanks and assigned players pick up their advisors immediately.
  • Raid follows the assigned kill order.
  • Thaladred target must kite cleanly and avoid bringing him through the raid.
  • Capernian remains separated from the raid.
  • Control fear, bombs, and other advisor mechanics calmly.
  • Use legendary weapons properly to reduce dangerous effects.
  • Kill advisors quickly before Kael enters the fight.

Common Phase 3 mistakes:

  • Advisors revive in bad positions
  • Thaladred runs through the raid
  • Capernian too close to players
  • Kill order ignored
  • Players forget to use legendary weapon effects

Phase 3 is the “did we set up Phase 1 properly?” check.

Phase 4: Kael’thas Active

Kael becomes active and begins using major boss mechanics while the raid handles Phoenixes, Mind Controls, Shock Barrier, and Pyroblast.

Key mechanics:

  • Fireball — interrupt where assigned.
  • Shock Barrier — must be broken quickly.
  • Pyroblast — tank must survive using correct tools/cooldowns.
  • Mind Control — controlled players must be handled quickly.
  • Phoenix — must be kited/killed, then egg killed.
  • Flamestrike — move out.

Strategy:

  • Main tank picks up Kael with assigned legendary weapon support.
  • Interrupt Fireballs according to the raid plan.
  • When Shock Barrier appears, DPS breaks it quickly.
  • Pyroblast survival must be planned with tank cooldowns and weapon usage.
  • Handle Mind Controlled players without killing them unnecessarily.
  • Phoenixes must be controlled and killed away from the raid.
  • Kill Phoenix Eggs before they hatch.
  • Move out of Flamestrike immediately.

DPS priority:

  1. Shock Barrier when active
  2. Phoenix Egg
  3. Phoenix if assigned
  4. Mind Control control/break where appropriate
  5. Kael’thas

Common Phase 4 mistakes:

  • Shock Barrier not broken fast enough
  • Tank dies to Pyroblast
  • Phoenix Eggs ignored
  • Mind Controlled players kill healers
  • Players stand in Flamestrike
  • Interrupts not assigned

Phase 5: Gravity Lapse and Final Burn

At the final stage, Kael uses Gravity Lapse and the fight becomes more chaotic. The raid must avoid unnecessary damage, spread in the air, and finish cleanly.

Strategy:

  • When Gravity Lapse begins, players are lifted into the air.
  • Spread out while floating.
  • Avoid Nether Beam / arcane-style damage lines and orbs.
  • Do not stack on other players.
  • When Gravity Lapse ends, recover positioning quickly.
  • Continue handling Phoenixes, eggs, and boss mechanics.
  • Use final cooldowns once the raid is stable.
  • Do not tunnel so hard that you die to avoidable air-phase damage.

Common Phase 5 mistakes:

  • Raid stacks during Gravity Lapse
  • Players float into orbs/damage zones
  • Phoenix or egg ignored during final burn
  • Healers lose position after landing
  • DPS tunnels during dangerous mechanics

Kael’thas is not won by one good burn. It is won by surviving every phase cleanly enough that the final burn is controlled.

Back to boss list

9. Trash Packs That Actually Matter

The Eye trash can slow progression badly if the raid loses focus. Clean trash matters because Kael’thas progression time is valuable.

Good trash habits:

  • Let tanks pull.
  • Mark dangerous targets.
  • Use crowd control where useful.
  • Interrupt dangerous casts.
  • Do not AoE before tanks have control.
  • Watch patrols and line-of-sight pulls.
  • Keep healers in range before engaging.
  • Recover quickly after bad pulls instead of chain-wiping.

Common trash mistakes:

  • Body-pulling extra packs
  • DPS opening too early
  • Ignoring dangerous casters
  • Healers drinking while tanks continue
  • Raid loses focus between bosses
  • Wasting too much time before Kael’thas attempts

Trash wipes are not just repair costs. They steal time from the fights that actually need practice.

10. Common The Eye Wipe Causes

Most wipes in The Eye come from predictable assignment and movement failures.

Al’ar wipe causes:

  • Platform tanks not ready
  • Players staying up during Flame Quills
  • Embers not controlled
  • Fire patches ignored
  • Phase 2 impact/add handling messy

Void Reaver wipe causes:

  • Ranged stacked too close
  • Arcane Orbs ignored
  • DPS pulls threat
  • Healers not spread enough to cover raid
  • Players tunnel through Pounding and orb movement

Solarian wipe causes:

  • Bomb player stands in raid
  • Add waves not controlled
  • Raid clumped too tightly
  • Final form tank/healer response too slow

Kael’thas wipe causes:

  • Advisor corpses dropped in bad positions
  • Weapon assignments unclear
  • Critical legendary weapons not picked up
  • Phase 3 advisors uncontrolled
  • Shock Barrier not broken
  • Tank dies to Pyroblast
  • Mind Controls ignored
  • Phoenix Eggs ignored
  • Gravity Lapse positioning failed

Easy fixes:

  • Use Raid Planner to assign Kael’thas advisors and weapons before raid.
  • Run Raid Check before invites.
  • Write the Kael weapon pickup list clearly.
  • Assign Phoenix and egg teams.
  • Explain Gravity Lapse before the pull.
  • Give Kael’thas dedicated progression time instead of reaching him tired and rushed.

The Eye punishes vague raid leading. “Everyone knows it” is not enough for Kael’thas.

11. How EpicForge Helps

The Eye is exactly the kind of raid where EpicForge can save time before the group zones in.

Use EpicForge before The Eye to:

  • Look up each character before invites
  • Check missing gems and enchants
  • Review obvious gear gaps
  • Check tanks before assigning Al’ar or Kael jobs
  • Compare characters if deciding between alts or fills
  • Use Raid Planner to build the 25-player roster
  • Use Raid Planner to assign Kael’thas advisors, weapon pickups, Phoenix control, and healer coverage
  • Use Raid Check to catch raid-wide prep issues
  • Track linked characters and alts that can support the raid
  • Share character links in Discord before raid night

Good EpicForge pre-raid workflow:

  1. Create or review the Eye roster in Raid Planner.
  2. Check tanks and special assignment players first.
  3. Assign Al’ar platform tanks and add control.
  4. Confirm Void Reaver spread expectations.
  5. Assign Solarian bomb/add responsibilities.
  6. Assign Kael’thas advisor positions.
  7. Assign Kael’thas weapon pickups.
  8. Assign Phoenix and egg control.
  9. Check healers for gear, enchants, and mana sustain.
  10. Run Raid Check before final invites.
  11. Fix easy issues before pulling.

EpicForge will not kill Kael’thas for you, but it can help make sure the right people are geared, assigned, and ready before the fight starts.

12. Quick Summary

  • The Eye is a 25-player raid in Tempest Keep, Netherstorm.
  • It has four bosses: Al’ar, Void Reaver, High Astromancer Solarian, and Kael’thas Sunstrider.
  • It drops Tier 5 shoulder and chest tokens.
  • Al’ar requires platform movement, fire awareness, and add control.
  • Void Reaver requires spread, orb movement, and threat discipline.
  • Solarian requires bomb movement and add control.
  • Kael’thas is a long multi-phase fight with advisors, weapons, advisor returns, boss phase, and Gravity Lapse.
  • Kael weapon assignments should be made before the pull.
  • Phoenixes and eggs must be controlled.
  • Mind Controls must be handled quickly.
  • Gravity Lapse requires spread and awareness.
  • Use EpicForge Raid Planner and Raid Check before raid night, not after wipes start.

Why This Matters

Tempest Keep: The Eye is a major step in TBC progression. It is not just four bosses in a pretty crystal room. It asks your raid to handle movement, spread, adds, threat, long-fight execution, and one of the most assignment-heavy final bosses in the expansion.

A prepared raid with clear assignments, finished gems and enchants, proper consumes, and calm communication will progress far faster than a stronger-looking raid that tries to improvise every Kael’thas phase.

Do the prep, assign the jobs, check the roster, and treat The Eye as the raid where your team proves it can execute under pressure.
