TBC Cooking Leveling Guide 1–375

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Cooking is one of the easiest raid-prep professions to overlook in TBC. Food buffs are simple, cheap compared to major enchants or crafted gear, and useful for almost every class and spec.

This guide gives you a practical 1-375 Cooking route with clickable level ranges, rough craft counts, estimated materials, trainer breakpoints, recipe notes, raid food examples, and Wowhead-linked items for tooltips.

Quick Navigation

Important: material totals are estimates. Yellow and green recipes can take extra crafts, so keep a buffer instead of buying the exact minimum.

1. Why Level Cooking in TBC?

Cooking matters because food buffs are part of normal raid preparation. They are not flashy, but they add reliable stats for very little effort.

Cooking supports:

  • Personal raid food buffs
  • Gold-making through high-demand food
  • Fishing value
  • Alt support
  • Guild consume prep
  • Casual leveling and dungeon food

Common raid food examples:

If you are raiding without food, you are leaving free stats on the table. It is one of the easiest preparation gaps to fix.

2. Cooking and Fishing

Cooking pairs extremely well with Fishing because many strong Cooking routes and raid foods use fish.

Good reasons to level Fishing with Cooking:

  • You can farm your own materials instead of buying food mats
  • Fish-based recipes are often efficient leveling routes
  • Several useful TBC raid foods are fish-based
  • You can sell cooked food or raw fish depending on market prices

Useful fish-based food examples:

If you hate Fishing, you can still level Cooking by buying materials or using meat-based recipes. Just check Auction House prices before committing.

3. Estimated Shopping List

This shopping list depends heavily on whether you choose meat-based or fish-based recipes. Treat this as a practical estimate, not a perfect requirement.

Estimated early materials:

Estimated mid-level materials:

Estimated Outland materials:

Vendor materials:

Cooking material prices swing hard because many mats are awkward to farm. If one route is overpriced, use a fish-based or meat-based alternative.

4. Trainer Breakpoints

You need to train or unlock new Cooking ranks as you level.

  • 1-75: Apprentice Cooking
  • 75-150: Journeyman Cooking
  • 150-225: Expert Cooking
  • 225-300: Artisan Cooking
  • 300-375: Master Cooking

Important note:

  • Expert and Artisan Cooking may require books or quests depending on your faction and version path.
  • Master Cooking is learned in Outland.

Master Cooking trainers:

  • Alliance: Gaston in Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula
  • Horde: Baxter in Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula
  • Neutral: Jack Trapper is Tailoring, not Cooking — use the correct Cooking trainer or vendor for your faction in Outland.

Do not wait until your Cooking is capped to check the next rank requirement. Old-world Cooking has more annoying rank unlocks than most people remember.

5. Important Recipes

Cooking depends heavily on recipes. Some are trainer-taught, some are vendor-bought, some come from quests, and some are tied to Outland vendors or daily cooking rewards.

Useful recipe examples:

Check recipe source before buying materials. Nothing is worse than farming 60 meats and realising you do not have the recipe yet.

6. Leveling 1-75: Apprentice Cooking

This first bracket is easy and can be done with vendor materials and basic low-level meats.

1-40: Spice Bread

Craft: Spice Bread

Approx crafts: 40-60

Estimated materials:

This is the easiest start because both materials are vendor-bought.

40-75: Smoked Bear Meat / Roasted Boar Meat / Charred Wolf Meat

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 35-50

Estimated materials:

Train Journeyman Cooking at 75.

7. Leveling 75-150: Journeyman Cooking

This bracket uses low-mid meats or fish. Choose whichever material is cheapest or easiest for your character to farm.

75-100: Crab Cake / Boiled Clams / Cooked Crab Claw

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

  • Crab, clam, or crawler materials x 25-35 depending on selected recipe

100-125: Seasoned Wolf Kabob / Crocolisk Steak

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

125-150: Curiously Tasty Omelet / Gooey Spider Cake

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

Train Expert Cooking when available. Depending on your version path, you may need to buy or learn the Expert Cooking unlock before continuing.

8. Leveling 150-225: Expert Cooking

This bracket can use turtle, raptor, wolf, or fish recipes depending on your faction and material access.

150-175: Roast Raptor / Hot Lion Chops

Estimated materials:

175-200: Soothing Turtle Bisque / Mystery Stew

Estimated materials:

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

Unlock Artisan Cooking before going past 225. This is a common point where players get stuck.

9. Leveling 225-300: Artisan Cooking

This bracket uses higher-level old-world meats or fish. If you are also leveling Fishing, this can be a good place to use your catches.

225-250: Monster Omelet / Tender Wolf Steak

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

250-275: Juicy Bear Burger / Charred Bear Kabobs

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

  • Bear meat from high-level old-world bears x 25-35
  • Recipe-specific vendor materials where required

Alternative fish routes can also work here if you have Fishing leveled.

275-300: Mightfish / Salmon / Lobster Fish Route or High-Level Meat

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-40

Estimated materials:

  • High-level old-world fish x 25-40
  • Recipe-specific vendor materials where required

At 300, train Master Cooking in Outland before continuing.

10. Leveling 300-375: Master Cooking

This is the TBC section. You can level with meat, fish, or a mix depending on what you can farm or buy cheaply.

300-325: Buzzard Bites / Ravager Dog / Blackened Trout

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-40

Estimated materials:

Hellfire Peninsula is a strong starting area because you can farm Buzzard Meat and Ravager Flesh while questing.

325-350: Blackened Basilisk / Warp Burger / Roasted Clefthoof / Poached Bluefish

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-40

Estimated materials:

This is where Cooking starts producing real raid food. Do not vendor good food without checking prices.

350-375: Spicy Hot Talbuk / Fisherman’s Feast / Spicy Crawdad / Crunchy Serpent

Craft options:

Approx crafts: 25-45

Estimated materials:

Spicy Hot Talbuk gives Hit Rating and Spirit for 30 minutes, making it useful when hit rating matters. Wowhead lists it as restoring 7500 health and giving 20 Hit Rating and Spirit if you eat for at least 10 seconds. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

11. Useful TBC Raid Food

Once you hit 375, Cooking is mainly about having the correct food buff for your role.

Physical DPS food examples:

Caster DPS food examples:

Healer food examples:

Tank / stamina food examples:

Do not blindly copy another player’s food. Your best food depends on your class, spec, hit needs, threat needs, healing setup, and the fight.

12. How EpicForge Helps

Cooking is part of raid prep. It is not as flashy as BiS gear, but it is one of the easiest missing-prep problems to fix.

Use EpicForge to:

  • Check whether your character is properly geared before spending gold on consumes
  • Use Raid Planner to organise your roster before raid night
  • Use Raid Check to catch missing enchants, gems, gear gaps, and preparation issues
  • Review BiS and upgrade recommendations so you know which food stat actually matters
  • Track linked alts that can fish, cook, or support your main

Cooking gives the food buff. EpicForge helps you see whether the rest of the character is actually raid-ready.

Why This Matters

Cooking is one of the simplest ways to improve raid preparation in TBC.

Food buffs are cheap, reliable, and available to every character because Cooking is a secondary profession. A raid full of players using proper food is stronger than a raid full of players ignoring easy stats.

Level Cooking with a plan, pick the food that fits your role, and treat food buffs as normal raid prep rather than optional flavour.
