TBC Skinning Leveling Guide 1–375

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Skinning is one of the easiest and most reliable gathering professions in TBC. It supports Leatherworking, drums, leg armor, crafted leather/mail gear, Clefthoof gear, Felstalker gear, and steady gold-making.

This guide gives you a practical 1-375 Skinning route with clickable skill ranges, recommended zones, mob targets, Outland farming notes, gold-making tips, and Wowhead-linked leather for tooltips.

Quick Navigation

Important: Skinning speed depends on your character level, kill speed, mob density, competition, and whether you are skinning while questing or farming dedicated routes.

1. Why Level Skinning in TBC?

Skinning is valuable because Leatherworking uses huge amounts of leather, hides, scales, and specialty materials.

Skinning supports:

  • Leatherworking leveling
  • Drums for raid utility
  • Leg armor crafts
  • Leather and mail crafted gear
  • Clefthoof tank gear
  • Felstalker physical DPS gear
  • Gold-making through raw leather and specialty materials

Common materials you will gather:

Skinning is simple, but it stays useful because Leatherworking consumes a huge amount of materials from 1-375 and at endgame.

2. Best Profession Pairings

Skinning pairs naturally with Leatherworking, but it can also work well as a gold-making profession while leveling.

Best pairings:

  • Skinning + Leatherworking: best direct pairing for crafted gear, drums, leg armor, and profession leveling
  • Skinning + Mining: strong raw gold farming setup
  • Skinning + Herbalism: simple double-gathering setup while leveling
  • Skinning on an alt: useful if your main wants two crafting professions

If your main is min-maxing raid performance, Skinning may eventually be replaced by a crafting profession. But while leveling, gearing, or supporting Leatherworking, it is extremely useful.

3. Trainer Breakpoints

You need to train new Skinning ranks as you level.

  • 1-75: Apprentice Skinning
  • 75-150: Journeyman Skinning
  • 150-225: Expert Skinning
  • 225-300: Artisan Skinning
  • 300-375: Master Skinning

Master Skinning trainers:

Always train the next rank before you hit the cap. Nothing feels worse than skinning mobs for no skill because you forgot to train.

4. Skinning Basics

Skinning is simple: kill a skinnable mob, loot it fully, then skin the corpse.

Good Skinning habits:

  • Carry a Skinning Knife
  • Loot the corpse before trying to skin it
  • Farm dense beast areas where mobs respawn quickly
  • Choose mobs you can kill fast rather than mobs that are technically higher level
  • Skin while questing if you want passive progress
  • Farm dedicated loops if you want faster leveling

Skinning skill rule:

  • Mobs below level 10 can usually be skinned with 1 Skinning
  • Past level 10, multiply the mob level by 5 to estimate the required Skinning skill
  • Example: level 30 mob = about 150 Skinning required
  • Example: level 60 mob = about 300 Skinning required

Do not waste time on mobs you cannot skin yet. If the corpse is too high level, move to slightly lower mobs until your Skinning catches up.

5. Leveling 1-75: Apprentice Skinning

This first bracket is starter-zone beasts. You want fast kills and high mob density.

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Elwynn Forest
  • Durotar
  • Dun Morogh
  • Mulgore
  • Tirisfal Glades
  • Azuremyst Isle
  • Eversong Woods

Good mob targets:

  • Wolves
  • Boars
  • Bears
  • Cats
  • Bats
  • Low-level dragonhawks or ravagers in newer starting areas

Route advice:

  • Start with level 1-10 beasts
  • Move to level 10-15 beasts as your Skinning rises
  • Stay in dense areas and avoid long travel gaps
  • If mobs turn grey and stop giving useful skill, move to the next zone tier

Do not stress about perfect routes here. Skinning 1-75 is fast if you keep killing skinnable mobs.

6. Leveling 75-150: Journeyman Skinning

This bracket moves into Medium Leather and higher-level beasts.

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • The Barrens
  • Loch Modan
  • Westfall
  • Redridge Mountains
  • Silverpine Forest
  • Stonetalon Mountains
  • Wetlands
  • Hillsbrad Foothills

Good mob targets:

  • Raptors
  • Wolves
  • Bears
  • Crocolisks
  • Lions
  • Spiders where skinnable

Route advice:

  • Farm level 15-25 beasts
  • Wetlands crocolisks are useful if you are Alliance-side
  • The Barrens is strong because of beast density
  • Keep moving into higher-level beasts as your skill approaches 150

Medium Leather is heavily used in Leatherworking. If prices are high, this bracket can be good gold for a low-level character.

7. Leveling 150-225: Expert Skinning

This bracket introduces Heavy Leather and starts moving toward Thick Leather near the end.

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Thousand Needles
  • Stranglethorn Vale
  • Desolace
  • Arathi Highlands
  • Badlands
  • Dustwallow Marsh
  • Swamp of Sorrows

Good mob targets:

  • Raptors
  • Tigers
  • Panthers
  • Basilisks
  • Crocolisks
  • Hyenas
  • Turtles

Route advice:

  • Farm level 30-40 beasts
  • Stranglethorn Vale is strong because it has many beast quest areas
  • Badlands is good for skinnable beasts and solid grinding
  • Move to higher-level mobs when Heavy Leather stops giving strong progress

If you are leveling Leatherworking too, save Heavy Leather and Heavy Hides. You will burn through them quickly.

8. Leveling 225-300: Artisan Skinning

This bracket moves into Thick Leather and Rugged Leather. It is one of the best gold-making ranges for old-world Skinning.

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Feralas
  • Tanaris
  • The Hinterlands
  • Un’Goro Crater
  • Felwood
  • Winterspring
  • Western Plaguelands
  • Eastern Plaguelands

Good mob targets:

  • Yetis
  • Bears
  • Wolves
  • Chimaeras
  • Dinosaurs
  • Gorillas
  • Plaguehounds
  • High-level cats

Route advice:

  • Farm level 40-60 beasts
  • Feralas is strong for yetis, bears, wolves, and chimaeras
  • Un’Goro Crater is excellent for dinosaurs and gorillas
  • Winterspring is strong for high-level beasts and Rugged Leather
  • Eastern Plaguelands plaguehounds can be useful if routes are quiet

Do not leave for Outland at 300 if you forgot to train Master Skinning. Train first or your skill will cap.

9. Leveling 300-375: Master Skinning

This is the Outland section. Most skinnable mobs give Knothide materials, while specific mobs give valuable specialty materials.

300-325: Hellfire Peninsula and Early Outland

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Hellfire Peninsula
  • Zangarmarsh
  • Terokkar Forest

Good mob targets:

  • Boars
  • Ravagers
  • Helboars
  • Basilisks
  • Sporebats
  • Marsh beasts

Route advice:

  • Start in Hellfire Peninsula if your character can kill comfortably
  • Skin boars and ravagers while questing
  • Move to Zangarmarsh or Terokkar if Hellfire is overcrowded
  • Save Knothide Leather Scraps if you or a Leatherworker can convert them

Knothide Leather is the base material for most TBC Leatherworking, so it usually sells steadily.

325-350: Nagrand, Terokkar, and Blade’s Edge

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Nagrand
  • Terokkar Forest
  • Blade’s Edge Mountains

Good mob targets:

  • Clefthooves
  • Talbuks
  • Windrocs
  • Warp stalkers
  • Ravagers
  • Serpents

Route advice:

  • Nagrand is one of the best Skinning zones in TBC
  • Clefthooves are valuable because of Thick Clefthoof Leather
  • Ravagers and serpents can provide Fel Scales depending on mob type
  • Skin while questing or grind dense beast areas for faster gains

Thick Clefthoof Leather is valuable because it is used in tank gear and leg armor-related Leatherworking. Do not vendor it.

350-375: High-Level Outland Skinning

Main materials:

Recommended zones:

  • Nagrand
  • Blade’s Edge Mountains
  • Netherstorm
  • Shadowmoon Valley

Good mob targets:

  • High-level clefthooves
  • Ravagers
  • Warp stalkers
  • Nether rays
  • Dragonkin where skinnable
  • Fel hounds / demon beast-style mobs where applicable

Route advice:

  • Stay on high-density beast routes
  • Prioritise mobs that drop specialty materials
  • Farm Nagrand if you want reliable leather and clefthoof materials
  • Farm Blade’s Edge / Netherstorm / Shadowmoon for higher-level options and variety

At 375, your goal shifts from skill-ups to farming the materials your server actually needs.

10. Best Outland Skinning Zones

Outland Skinning is mostly about choosing the right zone for the material you want.

Hellfire Peninsula:

  • Good starting zone for 300+
  • Useful for boars and ravagers
  • Often crowded because everyone starts here

Zangarmarsh:

  • Good for early Outland Skinning
  • Useful if Hellfire is too crowded
  • Has beasts and sporebat-style mobs

Terokkar Forest:

  • Good transition zone
  • Useful while questing around Shattrath
  • Has warp stalkers and other skinnable mobs

Nagrand:

  • One of the strongest Skinning zones in TBC
  • Excellent for clefthooves, talbuks, windrocs, and general Knothide
  • Great for Thick Clefthoof Leather farming

Blade’s Edge Mountains:

  • Good for ravagers and high-level beasts
  • Useful for Fel Scales depending on mob choice
  • Better once your character can handle the zone comfortably

Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley:

  • Higher-level Skinning options
  • Useful for specialty materials and high-end farming
  • Can be dangerous or inefficient if your kill speed is poor

11. Gold-Making Tips

Skinning can make steady gold because Leatherworking consumes huge amounts of materials.

Gold-making rules:

  • Check leather prices before converting scraps or crafting Heavy Knothide Leather
  • Knothide Leather sells steadily because Leatherworking uses so much of it
  • Thick Clefthoof Leather can be valuable because of tank-related crafts
  • Fel Scales can sell well when Hunters, Shamans, or Leatherworkers need mail/leather crafts
  • Old-world Rugged Leather still sells because players level Leatherworking
  • Farm dense mobs you can kill quickly instead of slow high-level mobs
  • Skin other players’ corpses when possible, but do not be annoying about it

Fast kills matter. A lower-level dense farm can be better gold than a higher-level farm where every mob takes too long.

12. How EpicForge Helps

Skinning supports Leatherworking, and Leatherworking supports raid readiness through drums, leg armor, and crafted gear.

Use EpicForge to:

  • Check whether Leatherworking crafted gear is actually an upgrade
  • Review BiS and wish list items before farming expensive materials
  • Use Raid Check to catch missing leg armor, enchants, gems, and gear gaps
  • Use Raid Planner to see where drums and party utility matter
  • Track linked alts that can farm leather or support your main
  • Decide whether Skinning belongs on your main or a farming alt

Skinning gets the leather. Leatherworking turns it into gear and utility. EpicForge helps you decide whether that investment actually improves the character or raid.

13. Quick Leveling Summary

  • 1-75: starter-zone beasts for Ruined Leather Scraps and Light Leather
  • 75-150: level 15-25 beasts for Medium Leather
  • 150-225: level 30-40 beasts for Heavy Leather and early Thick Leather
  • 225-300: level 40-60 beasts for Thick Leather and Rugged Leather
  • 300-325: Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh, and Terokkar for early Knothide
  • 325-350: Nagrand, Terokkar, and Blade’s Edge for Knothide and specialty materials
  • 350-375: Nagrand, Blade’s Edge, Netherstorm, and Shadowmoon Valley for high-end Skinning

Why This Matters

Skinning is one of the simplest professions in TBC, but it supports one of the most raid-relevant crafting professions: Leatherworking.

Knothide Leather, Thick Clefthoof Leather, Fel Scales, Fel Hide, drums, leg armor, and crafted leather/mail gear all connect back to Skinning in some way.

Level it while questing, farm dense beast routes, and use the materials where they actually support your character, your alts, or your raid.
