TBC Leatherworking Leveling Guide 1–375

Updated 29 Apr 2026 Forum discussion

Leatherworking is one of the most raid-relevant professions in TBC. It supports leather and mail wearers, physical DPS, tanks, healers, and raid groups through crafted gear, armor kits, leg armor, and drums.

This guide gives you a practical 1-375 Leatherworking route with clickable level ranges, rough craft counts, estimated materials, trainer breakpoints, recipe notes, and Wowhead-linked items for tooltips.

Quick Navigation

Important: material totals are estimates. Yellow and green recipes can take extra crafts, so keep a buffer instead of buying the exact minimum.

1. Why Level Leatherworking in TBC?

Leatherworking is valuable because it gives access to crafted armor, leg armor, armor kits, and drums.

Leatherworking lets you craft:

  • Leather and mail armor
  • Armor kits
  • Physical DPS leg armor
  • Tank leg armor
  • Healing / caster leather and mail pieces
  • Drums for party-wide raid utility
  • BoP crafted gear from specialisations

Leatherworking is strongest when you are a leather/mail wearer, a physical DPS player, a tank needing leg armor, or part of a raid group that values drums.

2. Estimated Full Shopping List

This shopping list is based on the route below. Buy in chunks if your Auction House prices are unstable.

Estimated Classic materials:

Estimated TBC materials:

Leatherworking is naturally paired with Skinning. If you are buying every leather from the Auction House, expect this profession to get expensive.

3. Trainer Breakpoints

You need to train new Leatherworking ranks as you level.

  • 1-75: Apprentice Leatherworking
  • 75-150: Journeyman Leatherworking
  • 150-225: Expert Leatherworking
  • 225-300: Artisan Leatherworking
  • 300-375: Master Leatherworking

Master Leatherworking trainers:

When you reach 300 Leatherworking, train Master Leatherworking before continuing into Outland recipes.

4. Important Vendor Recipes

Some efficient TBC Leatherworking recipes come from vendors or reputation quartermasters. Check these before you hit the level range where you need them.

Important recipes:

Some TBC vendor recipes are Bind on Pickup or reputation-gated. Do not assume you can buy every pattern from the Auction House.

Approx crafts: 15-25

Estimated materials:

Train Expert Leatherworking at 150.

7. Leveling 150-225: Expert Leatherworking

Craft: Heavy Leather

Approx crafts: 7

Estimated materials:

155-165: Cured Heavy Hide

Craft: Cured Heavy Hide

Approx crafts: 10-20

Approx crafts: 15-25

Estimated materials:

180-190: Barbaric Shoulders

Train Artisan Leatherworking at 225.

8. Leveling 225-300: Artisan Leatherworking

This section uses Thick Leather and Rugged Leather. Rugged Leather demand can be high because it is used in several professions and pre-TBC routes.

225-235: Nightscape Headband

Craft: Nightscape Headband

Approx crafts: 10-15

Estimated materials:

235-250: Nightscape Pants

Approx crafts: 10-15

Estimated materials:

At 300, stop and train Master Leatherworking in Outland.

9. Leveling 300-375: Master Leatherworking

This is the TBC section. Knothide Leather and Heavy Knothide Leather are the main bottlenecks.

300-310: Knothide Leather

Craft: Knothide Leather

Approx crafts: 30

Estimated materials:

If you are buying leather instead of farming scraps, skip this and start with Knothide Armor Kits.

310-325: Knothide Armor Kit

Craft: Knothide Armor Kit

Approx crafts: 25-35

Estimated materials:

Alternative: if Rugged Leather is much cheaper, Wicked Leather Belt can carry you further into the 300s.

325-335: Heavy Knothide Leather

Craft: Heavy Knothide Leather

Pattern: Pattern: Heavy Knothide Leather

Approx crafts: 30-220 depending on how many Heavy Knothide Leather you need later

Estimated materials:

You need a lot of Heavy Knothide Leather later. Craft enough to reach 335, but do not panic if you need to make more later.

335-350: Thick Draenic Vest or Scaled Draenic Boots

Craft options: Thick Draenic Vest or Scaled Draenic Boots

Approx crafts: 18-25

Estimated materials for Thick Draenic Vest route:

Estimated materials for Scaled Draenic Boots route:

Pick the route based on your server prices. If Fel Scales are cheap, Scaled Draenic Boots can be attractive. If not, Thick Draenic Vest is simpler.

350-365: Heavy Knothide Armor Kit

Craft: Heavy Knothide Armor Kit

Approx crafts: 35-60

Estimated materials:

This can feel painful because skill-ups slow down near the end. Compare alternatives before burning through all your Heavy Knothide Leather.

365-370: Drums of Battle

Craft: Drums of Battle

Pattern: Pattern: Drums of Battle

Approx crafts: 6-8

Estimated materials:

This pattern requires Honored with The Sha’tar and is purchased from Almaador in Shattrath.

Pattern: Pattern: Drums of Panic

Approx crafts: 6-8

Estimated materials:

This pattern requires Honored with Keepers of Time and is purchased from Alurmi inside Caverns of Time.

10. Leatherworking Specialisations

At 225 Leatherworking and character level 40, you can choose a Leatherworking specialisation. This is optional for leveling, but it matters for crafted gear.

The three specialisations are:

  • Dragonscale Leatherworking: mail gear, often relevant to Hunters and Shamans
  • Elemental Leatherworking: leather gear with elemental-themed stats
  • Tribal Leatherworking: leather gear, often relevant to Druids and Rogues depending on itemisation

Do not pick a specialisation just because it sounds cool. Check whether the crafted gear actually fits your class, spec, phase, and BiS path.

11. Useful Endgame Leatherworking Crafts

At 375, Leatherworking becomes useful for raid prep, gear, and gold-making.

Drums:

Leg armor:

Crafted gear examples:

A lot of the strongest Leatherworking value comes from patterns, reputations, and specialisation choices. Leveling to 375 is only part of the job.

12. How EpicForge Helps

Leatherworking ties directly into raid readiness, gear planning, and roster prep.

Use EpicForge to:

  • Check whether crafted Leatherworking gear is actually an upgrade
  • Compare your current gear against BiS and wish list items
  • Use Raid Planner to see where drums and party utility matter
  • Use Raid Check to catch missing leg armor, enchants, gems, and gear gaps
  • Track linked alts that can farm leather or support your main
  • Review raid readiness before spending gold on expensive crafts

Leatherworking helps build and support the character. EpicForge helps you see whether that character is actually raid-ready.

Why This Matters

Leatherworking is one of the most practical professions in TBC because it supports both personal gearing and raid utility.

Drums, leg armor, armor kits, crafted leather/mail gear, and specialisation recipes all give Leatherworking a real place in TBC raid prep.

Level it with a plan, check your patterns and reputations early, and use it to support real raid readiness.
